Professor Godfred A. Bokpin, a renowned economist and finance professor at the University of Ghana, has called on the incoming government to limit the number of ministers to 40.
This recommendation comes as Ghana grapples with economic challenges, and Professor Bokpin emphasizes the need for credible leadership to internally stabilize the economy by reducing wasteful expenditure.
Reduce Ministries and Agencies for Efficiency
Speaking at the National Citizens Review and Feedback on the IMF Support Programme in Accra, Professor Bokpin advocated for a gradual reduction in the number of ministries and departmental agencies that do not contribute to efficiency and productivity.
He also expressed concerns that the current IMF recovery program benefits only a select few Ghanaians, calling for its abolition and the scrapping of the E-levy to ease the economic burden on citizens.
Prudent Governance Crucial for Economic Stability
Abdulkarim Mohammed, Coordinator of the Economic Governance Platform (EGP), warned that government expenditure tends to surge during election periods, potentially destabilizing the economy and leading to another IMF bailout.
He stressed the need for prudent governance to maintain economic stability, citing studies that show government overspending during elections often leads to economic instability and reliance on IMF support programs.
