The Ashanti Regional Director of the Environmental Protection Authority (EPA), Dr Jackson Adiyiah Nyantekye, has disclosed plans by the Authority to regulate excessive noise from preaching activities and other sources within communities.
According to him, the EPA will soon intensify public education campaigns aimed at reducing noise pollution and promoting a healthier environment.
Speaking in an interview with Akua Asiedua on Oyerepa Breakfast Time, Dr Nyantekye clarified that the Authority is not against religious activities or the preaching of the gospel, but is concerned about the increasing level of noise generated in some communities.
“We are not against preaching the gospel, but we want the level of noise to be reduced,” he stated.
He revealed that the EPA would conduct random monitoring exercises using noise meters to ensure compliance with environmental noise regulations.
“We will be going around with our noise meters randomly, and anyone found guilty will face the law,” he warned.
Dr Nyantekye also highlighted the negative health effects associated with excessive noise exposure, stressing that prolonged exposure to loud environments can affect people physically and psychologically.
“Noise has effects on our health. People who live in noisy areas always shout when speaking. One can suffer heartburn as a result of noise. Scientists have also said noise could cause miscarriages and ulcers,” he explained.
He therefore appealed to the public, including religious groups and event organisers, to reduce unnecessary noise and comply with environmental regulations to help maintain peace and protect public health.
