The Ranking Member on Roads and Highways who doubles as the Member of Parliament of Adaklu Constituency in the Volta Region, Governs Kwame Agbodza wants the government to either demolish all tollbooths across the country or resume the collection of road tolls immediately.
He’s “alarmed” by the rampant accidents being reported at the various toll booths which are currently not functioning.
He said no measures have been put in place to control traffic flow at the various booths since they were decommissioned over a year ago.
The Kasoa and Motorway toll booths have recorded the most dangerous and life-threatening accidents. He, therefore, urged the government to, “as a matter of urgency, demolish all those tollbooths or take steps to decommission them to save life and property.
The lawmaker of Adaklu Constituency called on the government as quickly as possible send the police back to the various tollbooths to control the place so that drivers using the roads at night will not have accidents.
“The decision to abandon the toll booth as revenue collecting points and turning them into public places of convince (toilet) was all political talk”, he opined.
Mr Agbodza indicated that the minority in Parliament has been vindicated when they kicked against the abolishing of the road toll looking at the economic hardship.
Road tolls were cancelled in 2022 following the introduction of the Electronic Transaction Levy (E-Levy). The road tolls were, however, re-introduced during the 2023 budget presentation on Thursday, 24 November.
