About 49 teenage pregnancy cases have been recorded in the Builsa North Municipality in the Upper East Region within 6 months in 2024.
A Nutrition Officer with the Builsa North Municipal Health Directorate of Ghana Health Service, Mr. Selassie Akanieka Bawa, revealed this at a stakeholders review meeting held in Sandema on Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR) on Tuesday, June 18, 2024.
The Nutrition Officer, who expressed worry about the surge in teenage pregnancies in the Municipality, noted that a total of 108 cases were recorded in 2022 and 100 cases in 2023 among teenage girls between the ages of 10 to 19 years, which is alarming.
Mr. Akanieka attributed the cause largely to adolescents’ lack of accurate information on their sexual and reproductive health and rights and called for collective efforts from all stakeholders to address the challenge.
He said all efforts needed to be made towards breaking barriers to education, to provide young persons with the right information about their life to enable them to make informed choices.
