Prof Samuel Adu-Gyamfi, the Head of History and Political Studies at KNUST has emphasized that Ghanaians should not underestimate Vice President Bawumia and the NPP in the upcoming 2024 elections.
In the NPP Primaries held on November 4, 2023, Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia emerged as the winner with 118,210 votes, representing 61.47% of the total votes. His main competitor, Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, a Member of Parliament for Assin Central, secured 71,996 votes, accounting for 37.41%.
Following the NPP primaries, many Ghanaians, particularly the opposition party, the National Democratic Congress (NDC), have expressed the belief that Dr Bawumia is a weak candidate compared to their leader, John Mahama, and therefore, the NDC’s victory in 2024 is already certified.
However, Prof Samuel Adu-Gyamfi holds a different perspective, suggesting that it is actually the NDC who wanted to avoid facing Bawumia in the 2024 contest. He believes that the new NPP leader poses a significant threat to Mahama’s chances of success.
According to Prof Samuel Adu-Gyamfi, no other presidential candidate could have posed a challenge to Mahama in 2024 if Bawumia had not been elected.
He explained that Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia has the potential to force the 2024 elections into a run-off, thereby breaking the eight.
“Bawumia is best, able to possibly push the election into a runoff.”
“The reality of the matter is that the NDC know that, Bawumia would be a difficult candidate for them. They’re not ignorant, they know it. And they’ll not come out anywhere and assume that Bawumia is a strong candidate. If they do that, they’re not being intelligent and don’t understand politics…” The KNUST Lecturer stated on Oyerepa Breakfast Time, Monday, November 6 2023..
Prof Adu-Gyamfi further said, the NDC will slap Bawumia with the country’s deteriorated economy and are going make his work very difficult.
He added that, if the NPP had elected Kennedy Agyapong, his case would have been worse. The NDC would have had a big advantage over their rivals. Subsequently, NDC will try to vilify Bawumia, yet he can possibly push the 2024 polls into a runoff.
