Ernest Owusu-Bempah, a Deputy Communications Officer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has sparked fresh debate within the party by openly calling for a change in leadership ahead of the 2028 general elections.
In a strongly worded statement during an appearance on Oyerepa Breakfast Time, Owusu-Bempah criticized the party’s recent approach and pointed to Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s candidacy as a major factor in the party’s defeat in the 2024 elections.
“The ordinary Ghanaians want NPP to change Bawumia in 2028,” Owusu-Bempah declared, highlighting widespread dissatisfaction among the grassroots.
He suggested that the party leadership ignored clear public sentiment leading up to the last election.
Drawing comparisons to past political climates, he recalled moments when the Ghanaian public rallied behind leaders like J.A. Kufuor, Jerry John Rawlings, and John Evans Atta Mills. According to him, the NPP has historically failed to listen when the people called on the NPP to change Dr Bawumia. The Party executives enjoyed dancing to King Paluta’s Makoma (Sisi Fiaa) song with Bawumia on campaign rallies rather than bringing on who the grassroots were yelling for.
“…When the Ghanaian people were calling for J.A Kufuor, when the ordinary people were calling for President Rawlings, when the ordinary people were calling for President Mills, when they were telling us to change our candidate, we didn’t listen. When we were dancing to ‘Sisi fiaa’, Ghanaians were calling for John Mahama.” Stated.
