Members of the Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) Association in Asunafo South District of the Ahafo Region, staged a peaceful demonstration in Kukuom to express their frustration over the delayed disbursement of their share of the district common fund.
The association, led by Chairman Richmond Osei Bonus, presented their grievances to Paramount Chief Osahene Kweku Aterkye II of the Kukuom Traditional Council and Asunafo South District Chief Executive Hon. Frank Aduse Poku, seeking their intervention to address the issue.
The protesters also demanded the immediate transfer of Asunafo South District Director of Social Welfare, Madam Lovely Kpodo, citing stigma concerns.
According to the National Council for Persons with Disability (NCPD), the phyiscally challenged people have the right to participate in mainstream development activities and should be guaranteed full enjoyment of their rights without discrimination.
The NCPD was established by the National Persons with Disability Act, 2006, Act 715, to propose and evolve policies that mainstream persons with disability in the national development process.
The Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, adopted by the United Nations in 2006, emphasizes the importance of promoting and protecting the human rights of persons with disabilities, including their right to equality and non-discrimination.
