The Member of Parliament for Akrofum, Joseph Azumah, has held a meeting with commercial motorcycle riders (Okada riders) in his constituency to outline the benefits of new reforms set to regulate their transport system. The reforms, which aim to legalize and professionalize the sector, are designed to improve safety, reduce harassment by the police, and enhance the livelihood of riders.
During the engagement, Hon. Azumah emphasized that these reforms would not only protect riders but also provide a legal framework that would allow them to operate without the fear of being penalized or arrested.
He assured them of his full support in guiding them through the process of obtaining training and acquiring licenses required under the new regulations.
“As your MP, I will lead you through the process of getting the necessary training and licenses that the government has set up. This will ensure that your businesses can thrive without harassment and that you will be recognized legally. I have made cash amount of Gh 100,000 to start the free licences for 300 riders” Hon. Azumah told the riders.
The new reforms, which are part of the government’s initiative to regulate the Okada transport system, include several requirements for riders. These include:
-
Riders must be 25 years or older.
-
They must possess a valid National ID card.
-
They are required to purchase the appropriate protective gear, including helmets.
-
Riders must undergo proficiency exams and eye tests.
-
They must acquire a DVLA-approved Okada riding card.
-
They will need to undergo training to qualify for a unique yellow number plate.
In addition, the reforms mandate that each rider and passenger must wear a helmet, and riders must obey all traffic regulations.
Failure to adhere to these new rules will result in penalties, including a fine of up to 100 penalty units or possible imprisonment.
The MP’s engagement with the riders marks a significant step toward ensuring that the sector becomes more formalized and safer for all parties involved. By guiding the riders through the legal process, Hon. Azumah hopes to create a sustainable and recognized avenue for them to earn a living while contributing to road safety.
