Sakumono murder: Police retrieve pistol, 7 rounds of ammunition as 72-year-old suspect is arrested
A 72-year-old man suspected of shooting dead Irene Atubiga and her uncle, George Atubiga, at Sakumono in the Greater Accra Region has been arrested at Tikrom, near Ejisu, in the Ashanti Region.
The suspect, identified as Samuel Christopher Osei Anto, was arrested at his hideout on Sunday, November 1, according to a statement issued by the Ashanti Regional Police Command on Monday, November 2.
Police said a Smith & Wesson pistol and seven rounds of live ammunition were retrieved from the suspect during the operation.
The arrest followed intelligence gathered by officers about his whereabouts, leading them to his hideout, where he was apprehended. The recovered firearm and ammunition have since been retained as exhibits to aid investigations.
The suspect is wanted in connection with the fatal shooting of Irene, 47, and her uncle, George, 57, at their residence in NTHC Estate, Sakumono, on Friday, October 30, 2026.

Preliminary investigations suggest that the incident may have been triggered by a financial dispute between the suspect and George Atubiga.
Police investigations indicate that the suspect had allegedly borrowed GH¢500,000 from George but had failed to repay the money.
An earlier police account stated that the suspect visited the victims’ residence with a 47-year-old woman, identified as Beatrice Mumuni, to demand repayment of the debt.

A misunderstanding reportedly broke out during the encounter and escalated into the fatal shooting.
The suspect remains in police custody and is assisting investigators with inquiries into the circumstances surrounding the killings.
