The District Chief Executive (DCE) for Ahafo Ano South West in the Ashanti Region, Hon. Abubakar Sedik, has died after a brief illness.

Hon. Sedik reportedly died on the evening of Sunday, September 20, 2026, after taking part in a series of official engagements with the Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Mahama Ayariga, in Kumasi.

The late DCE was among a group of DCEs who accompanied the minister to the Kumasi Kejetia Phase II project site on Sunday for engagements with stakeholders on developments at the project.

The delegation later attended a stakeholders’ meeting with trader unions at the Kumasi Central Market, which ended at about 5:00 p.m.

Hon. Sedik and some of the other DCEs subsequently proceeded to the Ashanti Regional Coordinating Council for another meeting with the minister later in the evening.

It was after these engagements that news emerged of the sudden death of the Ahafo Ano South West DCE.

His death has sent shockwaves through the Ahafo Ano South West District, the Ashanti Region and the local government sector, with residents, colleagues and government officials mourning the loss of a serving DCE.

A statement announcing his passing described it as a profound loss to his family, the people of Ahafo Ano South West, his colleagues, the Ashanti Region and the government.

Details surrounding the cause of his death, as well as arrangements for his funeral, have yet to be announced.
