Prisons Officer interdicted over alleged attempt to smuggle suspected Indian Hemp into Kete-Krachi Prison

The Ghana Prisons Service has interdicted No. 8566 Chief Officer Michael Osei-Bonsu after he was arrested for allegedly attempting to smuggle a substance suspected to be Indian hemp into the Kete-Krachi Local Prison.

The incident occurred on Friday, June 19, 2026, during routine security checks conducted by officers ahead of the night shift. According to the Service, vigilant officers on duty detected and intercepted the suspected narcotic substance at the prison gate before it could be brought into the facility.

Following the interception, the officer was handed over to the Kete-Krachi District Police for further investigation. He was subsequently arraigned before the Kete-Krachi District Magistrate Court and remanded into custody for two weeks. The case has been adjourned to July 8, 2026.

The Ghana Prisons Service confirmed that the officer has been interdicted in accordance with its disciplinary regulations, pending the outcome of both the criminal proceedings and internal investigations.

The Service reiterated its zero-tolerance stance on drug-related offences and the smuggling of contraband items, including mobile phones, into prison facilities.

In a statement, it emphasized its commitment to maintaining professionalism, discipline, integrity and security in the discharge of its mandate.

Management also commended the officers whose vigilance led to the interception of the suspected contraband, describing their actions as consistent with efforts to safeguard prison security nationwide.

The Service added that it remains committed to preventing the infiltration of prohibited items into correctional facilities across the country.
