Ghanaian media personality and entrepreneur Diamond Michelle Gbagonah, popularly known as Michy, has encouraged young Ghanaians to believe in opportunities within the country rather than risking their lives in search of greener pastures abroad.

Michy made the remarks at the Accra International Airport while receiving some Ghanaians who were evacuated from South Africa following recent xenophobic attacks that reportedly affected several foreign nationals on June 7, 2026.

The attacks, which allegedly targeted migrants and foreign-owned businesses in some parts of South Africa, reignited long-standing concerns about xenophobia in the country. Over the years, several African nationals, including Ghanaians, Nigerians, Zimbabweans, and Ethiopians, have faced violent attacks, harassment, and threats during outbreaks of anti-foreigner sentiments in South Africa.

Speaking to the media, the former partner of dancehall artiste Shatta Wale stressed that Ghana still offers enough opportunities for individuals who are determined, hardworking, and willing to make use of their talents and skills.

“I believe there’s a lot of money to be made in this country. Don’t go to someone’s country and say there’s no money in your country. Make use of your talents and skills. Find something you like and do it,” she stated.

According to Michy, many people often underestimate the potential available in Ghana because of negative perceptions about the economy and limited opportunities. However, she believes success depends more on determination and consistency than location.

“It’s all about your mindset. Whatever you do, put your mind to it and know where you want it to get to. If you are persistent, you will get there,” she added.

Her comments come at a time when many young Africans continue to travel abroad in search of better living conditions and economic opportunities, despite growing concerns about racism, xenophobia, and difficult working conditions faced by migrants in some countries.

Michy’s message has since generated conversations online, with some social media users agreeing with her call for young people to build opportunities at home, while others argued that the harsh economic realities in Ghana continue to push many citizens to seek better lives overseas.

Known for her outspoken personality and entrepreneurial ventures, Michy has over the years used her platform to speak on social and lifestyle issues affecting young people in Ghana.
