“This World Cup is a dub!” — Kwesi Arthur blasts FIFA over rising costs
Ghanaian rapper Emmanuel Kwesi Danso Arthur, popularly known in the music industry as Kwesi Arthur, has voiced his disappointment over preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, criticising what he describes as excessive costs surrounding the global football tournament.
The award-winning rapper shared his frustrations in a post on X, where he suggested that the excitement he once had for the competition has faded because of the rising expenses linked to attending and experiencing the tournament.
According to Kwesi Arthur, accommodation, transportation, and other costs connected to the World Cup have become overly expensive, making it difficult for supporters and even players to fully enjoy the atmosphere of the competition.
“This World Cup is a dub. I’m not excited to watch the games. They ruined it by overcharging for everything. Players can’t even be in the host country,” he wrote.
His comments quickly sparked reactions online, with some football fans agreeing that the growing commercialisation of major sporting events has made them less accessible to ordinary supporters, while others argued that the excitement of the World Cup remains unmatched regardless of the costs involved.
The 2026 FIFA World Cup, scheduled to kick off on June 11, 2026, will be jointly hosted by the United States, Mexico, and Canada, making it the first edition of the tournament to be hosted by three countries.
Ghana’s national football team, the Black Stars, will compete in Group L alongside England, Croatia, and Panama as they fight for qualification to the knockout stages of the competition.
Kwesi Arthur’s remarks add to ongoing conversations among football fans globally about the increasing financial demands associated with major sporting tournaments, especially as travel and accommodation prices continue to rise ahead of the highly anticipated event.
