Gov’t committed to cutting drug import dependence – Dr. Hafez at Pharma expo 2026

Dr. Hafez Adam Taher, Director, Technical Coordination, Ministry of Health, has reaffirmed government’s commitment to strengthening Ghana’s pharmaceutical sector at the West Africa Pharma and Healthcare Expo 2026.

Speaking on behalf of the Minister of Health, he said the expo comes at a critical time as Ghana works to reduce reliance on imported medicines and build a resilient local manufacturing base.

“Government recognizes that a strong healthcare system must be supported by a strong pharmaceutical industry. This expo provides the platform to connect local manufacturers with global partners, share innovations, and attract investment,” she stated.

Dr. Adam noted that the Ministry is prioritizing policies that promote local production, improve regulatory processes, and ensure access to affordable, quality medicines for all Ghanaians.

He commended organizers for bringing together manufacturers, distributors, regulators, and health professionals, adding that such collaboration is key to addressing challenges in drug supply, healthcare delivery, and disease prevention across West Africa.

The Ministry of Health pledged continued support for initiatives that advance universal health coverage and position Ghana as a hub for pharmaceutical innovation in the sub-region.

Mr. Praveen singh , Director of Exhibition said Ghana has emerged as one of the most dynamic pharmaceutical and healthcare markets in West Africa, driven by population growth, rising health awareness, hospital expansion, and increasing demand for quality medicines, medical equipment, diagnostics and healthcare technology.

“Ghana imports a substantial volume of pharmaceuticals, medical devices, laboratory solutions and healthcare technologies each year, creating immense business opportunities,” he noted.

He recalled that the expo began in 2022 with a simple vision: to connect West African healthcare stakeholders with global manufacturers, innovators and solution providers. What started as a modest initiative has grown into a recognized international platform attracting participants from across the world.

“Our philosophy has been simple. We don’t see anyone as our competitor. Our biggest competitor is ourselves. Every year we challenge ourselves to do better, improve the quality of exhibitors, attract more professional visitors, and deliver greater value,” Mr. Praveen singh stated.

He said the success of the Accra expo has encouraged ACE Group and Astrovision Global to expand into South Africa, Nigeria, Uganda, Malaysia, the Philippines, Zimbabwe and Botswana, as they continue building trade bridges between global healthcare suppliers and growing African markets.

The 3-day event, running June 8–10, 2026, brings together government officials, regulators, manufacturers, hospital suppliers, and traditional medicine practitioners to discuss local manufacturing, technology transfer, infrastructure, and investment in the health sector.
