Weija Dam Spillage Submerges Hundreds of Homes in Accra, Leaves Residents Stranded

Hundreds of homes in parts of Weija in Accra have been submerged following the controlled spillage of the Weija Dam, leaving many residents stranded and forcing several others to evacuate.

Ghana Water Limited confirmed that it had begun releasing excess water from the dam after water levels rose beyond safe operating limits, raising concerns of a potential overflow.

In a statement issued on May 27, 2026, the utility company indicated that the dam’s water level had exceeded 48 feet, necessitating the opening of all spill gates as a precautionary safety measure to protect the facility’s structural integrity.

GWL explained that the controlled spillage is a standard operational procedure during periods of heavy rainfall, when increased inflows place pressure on the dam’s capacity.

The situation has triggered widespread flooding in nearby communities in Accra, with several households displaced and many residents struggling to salvage their belongings as floodwaters inundate homes and roads.

Emergency response efforts are expected to intensify as authorities assess the scale of damage and provide relief support to affected residents.
