The Minister for Energy and Green Transition, Dr John Abdulai Jinapor, has formally petitioned the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), calling for a thorough and impartial investigation into the alleged assault of staff of the Energy Ministry by police officers.
The incident reportedly occurred on Thursday, January 15, 2026, while the staff were commuting to work in an official ministry bus. In a post on X on Friday, January 16, the Ministry’s spokesperson, Richmond Rockson, clarified that the alleged assault was carried out by personnel of the Ghana Police Service, and not officers of National Security as earlier speculated.
“Let it be clearly placed on record that the individuals who perpetrated this despicable and unacceptable act are personnel of the Ghana Police Service, and not officers of National Security,” Mr Rockson stated. He stressed that no citizen should be subjected to such treatment, particularly by law enforcement officers entrusted to protect lives and uphold the rule of law.
According to available information, the altercation reportedly followed an exchange in which some of the ministry staff allegedly insulted the officers over what was described as reckless driving. However, Dr Jinapor has rejected any attempt to justify the alleged assault on those grounds, describing such actions as unacceptable.
The Minister condemned the incident, stating that provocation, verbal exchanges or disagreements can never justify violence or an abuse of power by security personnel. He described the reported conduct as “wholly indefensible” and inconsistent with the standards expected of the Police Service.
Dr Jinapor has therefore urged the IGP to ensure that the matter is investigated swiftly and independently, with appropriate sanctions applied should the allegations be proven. He emphasised that accountability is critical, not only to secure justice for the affected staff, but also to restore public confidence in the professionalism and discipline of the Ghana Police Service.
The Ministry says it will continue to cooperate fully with investigators as the process unfolds.
