A National General Secretary hopeful of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Eugene Boakye Antwi, says recent developments surrounding former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta have vindicated his long-held position on the need for leadership changes within the party while it was in government.
According to Mr Antwi, the continued public scrutiny of Mr Ofori-Atta following comments by the Office of the Special Prosecutor has confirmed concerns he and other party members raised earlier but which were ignored.
Mr Antwi, a former Member of Parliament for Subin in the Ashanti Region, was among the 88 NPP MPs who openly called for the removal of Ken Ofori-Atta during the administration of former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.
Speaking in an interview with Kwesi Parker Wilson on Oyerepa Breakfast Time, Mr Antwi said discussions on internal party platforms now reflect growing dissatisfaction among MPs over decisions taken at the time.
“On the MPs’ platforms, they are now complaining. Whatever I said has manifested, unless one is not being truthful, All that we said about the finance minister we failed to change look at the implications on us. Since February, Ken Ofori-Atta’s name has been in the newspapers after the Special Prosecutor mentioned his name.” he stated.
Mr. Antwi also criticised the reshuffle that removed Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu as Majority Leader, arguing that the decision weakened the party rather than strengthening it ahead of the elections.
“I said before the election that changing Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu would not help us. You don’t change your best MP. What did we change him for? Look at the results it had on us.” he stated.
Reflecting on recent events, Mr Antwi said developments surrounding Mr Ofori-Atta have reinforced his earlier warnings.
“What did Eugene Antwi say that has not manifested?” he questioned. “Today, has Ofori-Atta not been arrested? I feel vindicated. I was a minister, and I knew what was going on.”
