Commuters travelling along the Cape Coast–Twifo Praso road were left stranded on Monday morning as trotro drivers staged a protest at Ankaful Junction, demanding an adjustment in fares.
The drivers, who operate between Cape Coast and Twifo Praso, argue that they are being treated unfairly compared to their colleagues on the Cape Coast–Takoradi route. They claim both routes cover nearly the same distance, yet fares to Takoradi are considerably higher.
“We can’t continue like this,” one of the protesting drivers told Coastal Television News. “Fuel prices, maintenance costs, and spare parts have all gone up, but our fares remain the same. It doesn’t make sense that Takoradi drivers are allowed to charge more for the same distance.”
As part of the protest, the drivers blocked vehicles from the Twifo Praso direction, forcing passengers to either continue their journey on foot or switch to taxis to reach Cape Coast.
While some passengers expressed anger at the disruption, others sympathised with the drivers’ plight.
“It’s an inconvenience, yes,” one commuter said, “but I understand where they’re coming from. Everything has gone up in price — even water. They also have families to take care of.”
The demonstration caused major traffic disruptions, with long queues forming and some commercial vehicles avoiding the route altogether.
As of press time, neither the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) nor the Ministry of Transport had issued an official response. The drivers say their protest will continue until authorities approve a fare increase.
