Former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has expressed profound grief over the sudden death of Member of Parliament for Akwatia, Ernest Kumi, whom he described as not only a devoted political ally but also a close personal friend.
Dr. Bawumia visited the bereaved family on Tuesday, July 8, 2025, a day after the unexpected passing of the MP. His visit followed a National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting where the news of Kumi’s death first broke.
“We received the news while we were in the NEC meeting yesterday. Since then, none of us have been able to come to terms with it,” Dr. Bawumia said somberly.
Reflecting on their personal and political relationship, Dr. Bawumia praised Kumi’s unwavering loyalty and consistent support throughout his political journey.
“Ernest was my friend, and I’ve always stood by him, even during his campaign to become MP for Akwatia. No one in Parliament has supported me more than Ernest. He was always by my side,” he said.
He also shared a poignant memory of his last encounter with the late MP, revealing that they spent time together just days before the tragic news.
“This past Friday, he was at my house, and we had a long, warm conversation. He looked perfectly fine—there were no signs of illness. That’s what makes this so difficult to accept,” Bawumia added, visibly shaken.
Offering his heartfelt condolences, the former Vice President assured the grieving family of his full support throughout their period of mourning.
“We are here to mourn with you—not just as friends or colleagues, but as family. This pain is shared by all of us,” he said. “Please, when you begin making arrangements for his burial, do not exclude me. I will be with you every step of the way.”
