The Ashanti North Regional Police Command has arrested two individuals in connection with the murder of the former Headmaster of Dampong Senior High School, Eric Obeng Darko.
The suspects, identified as Mohammed Mubarak and Elizabeth Darkwah, both 38 years old, were arrested on June 9 and June 17, 2025, respectively. They have since been arraigned before the Kodie and Suame District Courts, where they were remanded into police custody. The duo is expected to reappear in court on July 4, 2025.
According to a police statement, preliminary investigations indicate that in 2024, Elizabeth allegedly defrauded the late Mr. Darko by collecting an undisclosed amount of money from him under the pretense of assisting him to recover ancient family gold.
As part of the elaborate scheme, Elizabeth is said to have visited the victim’s home in Bampenase near Mamponteng at night, accompanied by Mubarak. There, the two reportedly dug up 20 pieces of a yellowish substance, claiming it was gold. They told the victim the items needed to be purified at Elizabeth’s church before they could be used or sold.
However, Elizabeth allegedly avoided all subsequent efforts by Mr. Darko to arrange for the supposed purification process.
Investigators believe that Elizabeth later conspired with Mubarak and three other individuals who are currently at large to abduct and ultimately kill Mr. Darko—apparently to prevent him from visiting the church and exposing the scam.
The victim was taken to Aboabugya, and when he attempted to flee, Mubarak reportedly deliberately struck him with a Honda Odyssey vehicle, running him over and causing his death.
The Police have launched a manhunt for the remaining accomplices, and are urging the public to provide any information that could aid in their capture.
The case has shocked the local community, particularly those who knew Mr. Darko, a respected educator whose career was marked by service to the development of education in the region.
Investigations are ongoing.
