The National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) under the NDC administration says it has successfully cleared all outstanding debts inherited from the previous New Patriotic Party (NPP) government, marking a major step in restoring financial stability to the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS).
Speaking in an exclusive interview on Oyerepa Breakfast Time, Faustina Dery, Head of Corporate Communications at the NHIA, confirmed that the Authority had paid off the six-month debt left behind by the previous government.
According to her, the current administration has worked tirelessly to ensure the timely payment of claims to healthcare providers under the scheme.
“We inherited a six-month debt from the past administration, but we’ve been able to clear that deficit,” Dery said.
“Now that our finances are stable, we’re going to pay for all claims. This year alone, we’ve made payments of over GH¢1 billion in claims.”
“Our service providers can attest that the payment of claims has improved.” She disclosed.
She emphasised that the NHIA is committed to making the National Health Insurance Scheme more responsive and accessible to the public.
Dery added that the improved financial health of the Authority is already translating into better service delivery for NHIS members.
“We’re doing everything possible to let members of NHIS access free and quality health services,” she assured.
The announcement comes as a relief to many health facilities and providers who, in previous years, had raised concerns over delayed payments, which often led to strained operations and reduced services for patients.
