Suspended Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo has revealed that she has received threats intended to pressure her into resigning, as an official inquiry continues into multiple petitions seeking her removal from office.
Speaking at a press conference on Wednesday, June 25, 2025, Justice Torkornoo disclosed that she had been warned of personal harm should she refuse to step down. Though she did not identify the individuals allegedly behind the threats, she described them as part of a broader campaign to force her out.
“I have also received threats to the effect that if I failed to resign or retire voluntarily, I will be made to suffer some harm or the other,” she said.
Justice Torkornoo strongly criticized the ongoing inquiry process, accusing the committee overseeing the petitions of being influenced by political interests. She argued that the effort to remove her is part of a calculated attempt to take control of the Judiciary.
“This is a political agenda to remove me and control the Judiciary,” she stated, citing extensive media commentary as further indication of the alleged motivations behind the proceedings.
The Chief Justice also raised serious concerns about the way evidence is being handled during the inquiry hearings. She accused the petitioners’ legal team of selectively presenting materials submitted by public officials, in a manner that undermines the integrity of the process.
“The proceedings are being conducted as if it is normal litigation between the petitioners and myself,” she said. “Their lawyers now choose and pick which part of the evidence that public officials present to put on the table. This is also in violation of known rules regarding the proceedings of a committee of enquiry.”
