The National Communications Authority (NCA) has ordered 59 radio stations across Ghana—including Asaase Radio, Wontumi FM, and Happy FM—to suspend broadcasting for failing to comply with regulatory requirements.
In an official statement, the NCA stated that the affected stations violated key provisions of the Electronic Communications Regulations, 2011 (L.I. 1991), particularly Regulations 54 and 56, as well as specific terms and conditions of their broadcasting licences.
The enforcement action follows a March 2025 warning issued by the Minister for Communication, Digital Technology and Innovation, Sam George, who cautioned that 57 stations were at risk of suspension due to ongoing infractions. At the time, Mr. George emphasized that the intent was not punitive, but to provide an opportunity for stations to correct their regulatory lapses and align with broadcasting standards.
According to the NCA, the current sanctions are being implemented in phases, starting with stations flagged in its latest Frequency Audit Report. In total, 62 stations have been impacted, either due to expired or invalid authorisations or failure to meet compliance obligations.
The Authority stressed the critical role of radio stations in national development and public engagement but underscored the importance of regulatory compliance to maintain order and accountability in the broadcasting sector.
The NCA urged all broadcasters to strictly adhere to the terms of their licences and reiterated its commitment to fostering a transparent, well-regulated media environment in Ghana. Affected stations must address all outstanding regulatory issues before they are permitted to resume operations.
