Dennis Miracles Aboagye, a member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Communications Team, has raised concerns about the real impact of the cedi’s recent gains against the dollar on ordinary Ghanaians, particularly in light of rising fuel prices.
His remarks come in response to the newly introduced Fuel Levy, which imposes a GHC 1 charge per litre on all petroleum purchases.
Aboagye questioned the relevance of celebrating price drops at high-end appliance and furniture stores when market women at places like Malata continue to struggle due to increased transport fares. According to him, such economic improvements mean little if they don’t ease the burdens of everyday citizens.
“The introduction of this levy will mean that transport fares are going to skyrocket. This will mean that the appreciation of the dollar will have no effect on the market women at Malata. They will be suffering because fuel prices will increase, and the passengers will bear the brunt of the decision,” he said while speaking on Accra-based Asempa FM.
He continued, “The market women will pass it on to us. The government is touting Hisense, Orca Decor, and others who have reduced their prices as a result of the appreciation of the dollar. But the question is, how many Ghanaians patronize these luxury shops in the country? However, the prices in our markets are skyrocketing because the government is taking a cedi for every litre of fuel. The lord should give us the strenght because he is the only truthful one and in the future, will we will account for our stewardship”.
