The Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) has announced a 15% reduction in transport fares, which will take effect from Saturday, May 25, 2025.
The decision follows a high-level meeting between the GPRTU’s National Executive and the Minister of Transport, Joseph Bukari Nikpe, held on Monday, May 19, 2025.
Confirming the fare adjustment, GPRTU’s Public Relations Officer, Abbas Ibrahim Moro, stated that the move was prompted by an 18% decline in fuel prices.
“We just concluded a meeting with the Minister of Transport and have agreed that transport fares will be reduced by 15% starting May 25,” Mr. Moro told Accra-based 3news.
He explained that while the union typically adjusts fares based on one-third of any fuel price reduction, the current cut was made more significant to provide additional relief to passengers.
“Ordinarily, we base fare adjustments on a third of the fuel price drop, but this time we opted for a 15% reduction to better reflect recent fuel price trends,” he said. “We are also urging our counterparts in the spare parts sector to consider similar reductions.”
Mr. Moro emphasised that the GPRTU took this decision proactively, without waiting for reductions in other operational costs, to ensure passengers quickly benefit from the fuel price drop.
“We want it to be known that this reduction was implemented without waiting for other cost factors to change,” he added.
He also issued a firm warning to union members, stating that those who fail to implement the new fare structure will face disciplinary consequences.
“Once the union has taken a collective decision, all members are obligated to comply,” he cautioned.
