President John Dramani Mahama has unveiled plans to support young people involved in the Okada (commercial motorcycle) business through specialized training and access to electric motorbikes.
Speaking during his first State of the Nation Address on Thursday, President Mahama emphasized that the Youth Development Bank, in collaboration with the Interior Ministry, will facilitate the training of Okada riders in critical areas such as road safety regulations, financial literacy, and digital skills.
“The Youth Development Bank and the Interior Ministry will facilitate the training of our young people in the Okada business,” Mahama stated. “In areas such as road safety regulations, financial literacy, and digital skills, as well as facilitating the acquisition of motorbikes.”
As part of the initiative, the government plans to introduce electric motorcycles through a hire-purchase scheme, allowing riders to acquire them affordably while reducing dependence on petrol.
“We’ll introduce electric motorcycles on a hire-purchase scheme to eliminate the use of petrol and make their business more profitable,” Mahama added.
The initiative is expected to enhance road safety, improve financial stability for riders, and promote environmentally friendly transport options.
