The council of Inner city tribal chiefs and Queen mothers have appealed for a peaceful re-run of elections in 9 outstanding constituencies, citing concerns over the loss of lives and injuries during previous elections.
Speaking at a press conference, Hon Mallam A.Y. Isa, national Coordinator noted that under the 4th Republic, eight elections have been conducted, with varying degrees of violence and bloodshed.
Specifically, the council of Inner city tribal chiefs and Queen mothers mentioned that eight lives were lost in the 2020 elections, while six lives were lost in the 2024 elections, with several others injured.
The chiefs and Queen mothers attributed the violence to the failure of the Electoral Commission (EC), led by Jean Mensa, to ensure peaceful and transparent elections. They emphasized that as custodians of tradition and culture, they cannot stand by while precious lives are lost.
The council also called on the National Peace Council, Office of the National Chief Imam, the clergy, civil society organizations, and traditional chiefs and Queen mothers to join forces to promote peace and harmony in the country.
They also emphasized the need for the EC to be held accountable for its actions and to work towards preventing violence and bloodshed in future elections.
Inner city tribal chiefs and Queen mothers commended Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the presidential candidate for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), for conceding defeat early, showcasing exceptional statesmanship.
By doing so, Dr. Bawumia helped reduce tension, paving the way for a successful election. The chiefs and Queen mothers praised his decision, noting that it contributed significantly to the peaceful outcome of the elections.
