The Offinso Namong Wenchi M/A Basic School in the Ashanti region’s Offinso South district is celebrating a remarkable milestone – 60 years of providing quality education to generations of students.
Despite its proud history, the school faces significant challenges that threaten to impact its future.
Headteacher Mr Zulhak Zakaria has made a heartfelt appeal for assistance, highlighting the urgent need for additional teachers to enhance educational standards. “We take pride in our contributions to the community, having trained countless individuals who have gone on to make meaningful impacts,” Mr. Zakaria emphasized. “However, we cannot continue to deliver quality education without support.”
One of the school’s most pressing challenges is its inaccessible location, which is exacerbated by poor roads. Staff and students are forced to rely on motorbikes and canoes (Aboboya) for transportation, making it difficult to attract and retain teachers.
To commemorate its 60th anniversary, the school has scheduled a grand celebration for December 3rd, 2024. Mr. Zakaria has extended an invitation to all alumni and well-wishers to join the festivities and support the school.
“We’re proud of our heritage and the lives we’ve touched,” Mr. Zakaria said. “We now turn to our alumni and community to help overcome current challenges and continue providing excellent education.”
Meanwhile, community members, including Odikro Nana Arthur, have emphasized that Wenchi, a cocoa-farming community, has been neglected and lacks essential amenities such as electricity, good roads, a chip compound, and basic infrastructure.
They are calling on Members of Parliament, the Minister of Education, and non-governmental organizations to support the school’s fundraising event on December 3rd, which aims to build teachers’ quarters.
Residents have expressed their concerns, highlighting the importance of coming together to address the challenges faced by the school and to secure a better future for the community.
