The Most Reverend Professor J. Kwabena Asamoah-Gyadu, Presiding Bishop of the Ghana Methodist Church, delivered a powerful message at the 19th Annual Kronti ne Akwamu Democracy and Good Governance lecture organized by CDD-GHANA at the British Council in Accra.
He cautioned against false prophets who manipulate elections, emphasizing the importance of democratic principles and urging religious leaders to respect the democratic process.
During his speech, Prof. Asamoah-Gyadu stressed the need for religious leaders to uphold citizens’ autonomy and allow them to make informed decisions when casting their votes.
He denounced prophetic declarations that seek to influence elections, highlighting the dangers of false prophets who are motivated by personal gain rather than the well-being of the nation.
“Any prophetic declaration endorsing a specific candidate undermines democracy, which relies on citizens making informed, independent decisions,” he noted.
He added that “when religious leaders, who have considerable influence, use prophetic claims to support their preferred candidates, it’s reasonable to question the prophecy’s authenticity. Let’s trust democratic processes to unfold freely.”
