John Dramani Mahama, the flagbearer for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), believes that the current situation in Bawku could have been prevented if the country had taken proactive measures to address the issues earlier. Reports now show that the death toll from the ongoing conflict in Bawku has risen to 21.
Despite efforts to resolve the conflict, it persists without a clear resolution in sight. In a recent Facebook post, the former President emphasized the importance of peace rooted in justice and criticized the government for not being proactive in promoting peace in Bawku.
“I have always believed that we need a proactive attitude towards peace. Had we been proactive in addressing the tensions in our midst, perhaps we would not have faced tragedies such as those in Bawku, where lives are being lost and families are being shattered,” he said in a post shared via social media.
The Bawku conflict in Ghana is a protracted strife related to land ownership rights and chieftaincy between the Kusasis and Mamprusis, two major ethnic groups in the northeast.
