The 2024 CILT Logistics and Transport Conference, Exhibition, and Annual General Meeting has commenced in Accra, Ghana, under the theme “Logistics and Transport Operations in the Green and Circular Economy.”
This timely and crucial theme acknowledges the industry’s vital role in driving economic growth and shaping a sustainable future.
In his welcome address, the President of CILT Ghana Engr. Mark Affum Amoamah emphasized the need for sustainability leadership, highlighting the industry’s responsibility to facilitate efficient, resilient, and eco-friendly logistics and supply chain operations. He further noted that Ghana’s efforts to transition to a green and circular economy have been slow due to various factors.
The two-day conference brings together expert leaders sharing innovative ideas, exhibitions showcasing advanced technologies, and a technical visit to explore industry developments. Key attendees include, Mrs. Irene Messiba, Director of Policy, Planning, Monitoring & Evaluation at the Ministry of Transport and high-level dignitaries from Africa and beyond.
Ghana has implemented policies like the electric vehicles policy, but significant achievements are yet to be recorded. The Ministry of Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation (MESTI) has developed a Circular Economy Roadmap and Action Plan to foster strong alignment between academia and civil society.
The United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), Global Affairs Canada, and the Government of Ghana have launched the Ghana Circular Economy Centre Project to support the country’s transition to a circular economy.
Mrs Irene Messiba Director of Policy, Planning, Monitoring & Evaluation at the Ministry of Transport stressed that transportation plays a vital role in socio-economic growth and development but also contributes significantly to global greenhouse gas emissions. This reality has sparked national and global initiatives to adopt green transportation practices amidst escalating climate change concerns.
She added that transport sector’s substantial social and environmental impacts make it imperative to prioritize. I’m pleased the Council chose to focus on greening transport operations and circular economy, which aligns with the Ministry’s interests.
Mrs Irene Messibas’s speech read on behalf of the sector minister attributed that the conference offers a unique opportunity to explore innovative solutions, foster collaborations, and drive meaningful change.
“Today’s gathering is timely, considering the government’s ongoing efforts to modernize and promote decarbonization in the transport sector, aligning with the global push for a Net-Zero Emission Future. Let’s work together to create a more sustainable future for logistics and transportation.”
