The Member of Parliament for Madina, Francis Xavier Sosu, has issued a stern warning to the military, cautioning them against entering the chamber of Parliament on Tuesday.
The Ghanaian Parliament is set to reconvene tomorrow, Tuesday, October 22, 2024, to further discuss the recent disputes between the minority and majority factions.
Sosu, representing the National Democratic Congress (NDC), emphasized that his party, currently holding the majority in Parliament, will not relinquish its position to its rivals until after the December elections.
He firmly stated that the military has no place in the legislative process and should refrain from attempting to enter the chamber.
“It’s an illegality, no military personnel has the power to enter the chamber. The chamber is the house of the people. Members of parliament are masters of their own when they are on the floor. So the military has no room in our democratic dispensation of the floor (Parliament).”
On Wednesday night, January 7, 2021, tensions escalated in Parliament as members of the NPP and NDC clashed during the voting process to elect the next Speaker. The situation reached a boiling point when a member of the ruling party, Carlos Ahinkora, grabbed the ballot box, sparking chaos among the legislators.
The confrontation continued for several hours until the military intervened, with the entire incident broadcast live on national television.
While Sosu believes, the actions of the MPs were deemed shameful, it is also an illegality for the military to enter parliament.
“What happened that day was very shameful and it was a block on our democratic credential as people, it will never happen again.”
However, “the military has no room when it comes to the work of members of parliament. So on this Tuesday, which I call defiant Tuesday, ‘what will happen will happen’ because we’ll not sit aloof and watch NPP reclaim the majority in parliament. It will never happen until we (NDC) win the 7th December elections. We’ve become and won’t surrender it. ”
