The Executive Director for Right and Responsibilities Initiative Ghana (RRIG), Madam Aba Oppong has called on parents to reduce house chores duties on girls to enable them focus on their education.
Speaking at a girl child education program at Kuntanase in the Bosomtwe district of the Ashanti Region, she mentioned that, one of the major challenges in educating girls in Ghana is the heavy work load (house chores) on them.
According to her, most girls do many house chores duties such as fetching water, sweeping the compound, even bathing their young siblings before going to school. They as well go the farm for fire wood, they sell all sort of items, prepare food for their parents after school which doesn’t grant them enough time for studies.
She however advised girls to pay much attention to information technology in order to compete in this technological World.
Madam Aba subsequently appealed to government to remove tax on the importation of sanitary pads to make the prices affordable for the girls to be able to purchase it during their menstrual period.
She again pleaded with the government to strengthen the punishment of men who sexually abuse young girls and destroys their futures.
