The member of Parliament for Sene East constituency, Hon. Dominic Napare, has brought the minister for sanitation and water resources, Dr. Freda Akosua Prempeh, to parliament to answer questions on plans to provide a mechanised water under the Small Town Water Facility to the following major towns in the Sene East District: Bodinka, Nyankontre, Nketia Kurom Premuase, and Kojokrom.
According to the minister, the provision of three small town water systems in the above town will help meet the water needs of these communities when funds are available. CWSA plans to commence and complete designs for the water system by the end of the first quarter of 2024in readiness for implementation, subject to the availability of funds.
He also probed further into plans to provide solar electricity systems to small town water systems, particularly the Kajaji and Basa small town water systems, which will help reduce operational costs and make them affordable to the beneficiary communities.
Responding, the minister indicated that one of the major drivers of the reform is to improve service delivery in the provision of water. However, one of the key challenges is the high cost of electric operation.
She revealed that, consequently, there is a deliberate strategy to explore the use of sustainable and low-cost energy options.
Hon. Freda Akosua Freda Prempeh said that there is also a consistent policy to install hybrid pumps on all new water systems constructed while gradually changing all existing pumps to hybrids to accommodate solar energy.
She further assured that, even though the initial cost is high, Kajaji and Basa will be considered to enjoy hybrid power when funds are available.
Meanwhile, the lawmaker for the people of Sene East requested from the minister measures the ministry is putting in place to upgrade the limited mechanized water system at the Basa small town water system in view of the increased population at the Basa senior high school, which is now boarded.
According to the minister, Basa has been listed among the priority projects in the region, and planned implementation is scheduled for 2024, subject to the available funds.
