2023 National Fish Festival: Gov’t urged to remain resolute in fighting illegal fishing
Regina Solomon, the spokesperson for the National Fish Processors and Traditional Association (NAFPTA), has urged the government to address the issue of light fishing comprehensively across all fishing communities in order to achieve the desired outcomes.
Solomon also emphasized the importance of the government’s commitment to combatting illegal fishing practices, drawing parallels with the efforts made to combat illegal mining (galamsey).
She stressed the need for the government to enhance its monitoring of the country’s waters by deploying more naval officers to effectively eliminate this problem.
Madam Esi Awolo, the president of the Inland Fish Mongers Association of Ghana, echoed these sentiments at the 2023 National Fish Festival in Accra. She called for strict sanctions to be imposed on offenders as a deterrent to others.
Awolo also expressed concern about the poor state of the road network in certain communities, which has had a negative impact on their businesses. She appealed to the government for assistance in addressing this issue.
The use of light and heat is known to attract fish, enabling fishermen to catch them in large quantities, including fingerlings.
