Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, Member of Parliament (MP) for North Tongu Constituency in the Volta Region, has confirmed that the National Democratic Congress (NDC) will elect its flagbearer in March 2023.
The NDC voted into office its national executives on December 17, 2022, ahead of Ghana’s upcoming general elections in 2024.
Following that, the North Tongu lawmaker stated on the Oyerepa Breakfast Show, Tuesday that his party is most likely to elect its flagbearer in two months.
According to him, his party is quite late in choosing its flagbearer but discussions are still ongoing to fix the exact date for the election.
“In March we’re going to elect our flagbearer…. But let me be clear here, the time timetable isn’t out yet, but these are the discussions going on behind the scene…NEC will meet and they will agree and there’ll be a publication of the timetable.
Remember that, our constitution says when we are in opposition we must elect our flagbearer 2 years before the main election, so technically speaking we are late, we should’ve done this election on December 7 2022. .. For this reason, I don’t expect it to go beyond March.”
Former President John Mahama is highly rated to be elected to lead the NDC in 2024 whereas former Finance Minister, Kwabena Duffour is also keen on contesting for the position. A former Mayor of the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly, Kojo Bonsu on the other hand is poised to win the falgbereraship race.
