The Communications Manager for Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL), Mr Stanley Martey has hinted at a possible shortage of water in the country in 2025.
Elaborating on his assertion on the Oyerepa Breakfast Show hosted by Nana Yaw Mensah Joel, he stated that alluvial mining is having a tolling effect on water bodies making it difficult for GCWL to produce enough water for the country’s supply.
The Manager disclosed that many water bodies have been destroyed due to the operation of alluvial mining.
According to him, the country is likely to import water beginning in 2025 if alluvial mining is not halted in the country.
“The rate at which alluvial mining is destroying our water bodies, if care is not taken, we may have to resort to the importation of water in the next three years and beyond.“ He hinted.
Explaining further, the Communications Manager also stated that, the company is now spending more on water treatment as compared to the previous years due to the alluvial mining menace.
“We are now spending huge amounts in treating water due to this same canker. This year 2022 for instance, has given us an indication that there could be a water shortage sooner or later. We couldn’t supply the whole of the Western Region and some parts of the Central Region for more than a month because river Prah had dried up due to the activities of alluvial mining “ He added.
