A Political Science lecturer at the University of Ghana, Professor Ransford Gyampo has signalled Akufo-Addo’s government about the promise it made to the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG) before it called off their nationwide strike.
It could be recalled that UTAG embarked on a nationwide strike for close to three months over conditions of service but returned to lecture halls after meeting with the government.
According to the General Secretary of UTAG, members of the association accepted the amount of money government gave them because of the promise it made.
“Our members are still expecting the promise you (Akufo-Addo) made to us. If there is a need for you to seek an IMF bailout, remember you promised UTAG members. Make sure the IMF conditionality would not affect us or other public sector workers because we will not agree.” He asserted in an interview with Parker-Wilson host of Oyerepa Breakfast Time.
Ghana is seeking the support of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) to help address the country’s economic woes.
But Professor Gyampo warned that University teachers across the country will begin a series of protests against any conditionalities that will deny public sector workers an increment in their salaries and improved living conditions.
