In a surprising and bold statement, the Deputy Communications Director of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Ernest Owusu-Bempah, has called for the party to reject Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia as its flagbearer for the 2028 general elections.
Speaking in an exclusive interview on Oyerepa Breakfast Time, with Kwesi Parker Wilson, Owusu-Bempah asserted that Dr. Bawumia is not “the man of the people” and lacks the grassroots appeal necessary to lead the NPP to victory.
“I think the time has come for us to reflect deeply on the direction of the party. Dr. Bawumia has served, no doubt, but he is not the man of the people; reject him as the party’s flagbearer for 2028.” Owusu-Bempah stated.
He further emphasized that the party needs a leader who resonates with the ordinary Ghanaian and can restore the trust of voters ahead of the 2028 general polls.
Owusu-Bempah’s comments come amid growing conversations within the NPP about restructuring and re-energizing the party following its performance in recent elections. While Dr. Bawumia was the party’s flagbearer in 2024, Owusu-Bempah believes a fresh face and stronger grassroots engagement are necessary for a successful comeback.
