What began as a solemn occasion turned into a scene of political intrigue over the weekend, as former Vice President and 2024 NPP presidential candidate, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, was seen sharing a light-hearted exchange with former Minister for Food and Agriculture, Dr. Bryan Acheampong, at the funeral of the late Mamponghene, Daasebre Osei Bonsu II.
In a short video from the event that has since gone viral, Dr. Bawumia is heard jokingly telling the Abetifi MP, “You want to worry me,” eliciting laughter from onlookers. While the moment seemed casual, it has ignited speculation about the party’s future leadership dynamics.
Many have interpreted the remark as a subtle nod to the brewing contest for the 2028 New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearership. Dr. Acheampong is widely rumored to be considering a bid for the party’s top slot, though he has not publicly confirmed his intentions.
Although the NPP has not officially opened nominations, discussions within party circles have already spotlighted key figures as potential contenders. Among them is Kennedy Agyapong, the outspoken former Assin Central MP and 2024 flagbearer hopeful.
Dr. Bawumia, despite his 2024 loss, is expected by many to consider a second run. However, Agyapong appears skeptical about a comeback, citing the party’s historical stance on defeated candidates.
Speaking to party supporters in Mampong, Agyapong remarked, “The NPP doesn’t give second chances to candidates who fail to deliver. We didn’t do it for Adu Boahen, and we shouldn’t do it now.”
As the party begins to navigate the post-2024 political landscape, the funeral gathering served as more than just a farewell to a revered traditional ruler—it offered a glimpse into the subtle maneuvering and quiet conversations shaping the NPP’s path to 2028.
