Mr Sometymer Otuo Acheampong, a well-known sports journalist with Oyerepa FM, has outlined the actions of the striking teachers in response to the appointment of the Director General as abhorrent and must not be allowed to exist.
According to a renowned sports presenter, who doubles as the General Manager of Promise Broadcasting Ltd. the teachers are wrong, for not being in the classroom to teach because they appointed someone who they argue does not qualify to be the Director General of the Ghana Education Service (GES).
On the Oyerepa Breakfast Show, he objected to the teachers on strike, saying they could still protest his appointment while still attending school to express their displeasure with the government.
“Staying out from school and leaving these students alone in the classroom to me is totally wrong unless off-course there are other reasons attached to this issue” he stated.
He did, however, express his dissatisfaction with the behaviour of the teachers on protest, stating that their students should not be deprived in such matters.
He thinks this is merely administrative work and that the qualification of the person appointed to the office of Director General of Ghana Education Service is irrelevant, unlike other sectors that require a person with a related qualification to occupy the specific office.
“Look, these teachers may have good reasons to embark on their strike but what is the crime of parents or students in the school ” he questioned.
He divulged that the President has not committed any offence in appointing someone into office as the director general of GES.
” I believe the President has the prerogative power to appoint whoever he thinks can occupy any public office on the basis of the constitution unless maybe there is a clause in the constitution that says otherwise” he added.
