Women in Timber Ghana Association (WiTG) has officially been inaugurated.
The event under the theme; “Strengthening women’s participation in forestry and wood industry in Ghana” was held in Kumasi, the Ashanti Regional capital on Wednesday 18th May 2022.
Speaking at the ceremony, Mrs Ernestina Owusu Banahene (WiTG President) revealed that the Association was formed on February 15, 2022. It has 150 registered members.
According to her, WiTG was formed via private sector’s timber trade associations to establish a common front and voice to confront myriad of issues affecting businesses in the sector.
She declared that, WiTG mainly aims to serve as an active platform for building capacities of women in timber in Ghana towards realizing the economic and social viabilities of their businesses.
“The Association “will join forces with resources groups to tackle issues such as reforestation of degraded portions of the forest for future supply of raw materials and the fight against climate change.” Mrs Banahene added.
The WiTG President pledged that, her outfit is ready to partner the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources to achieve the government’s Green Ghana Initiative which is the state’s efforts towards restoring degraded landscape in the country.
A representative of the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources, Mrs Edith Abrakwa (Executive Director -Ghana Forestry Commission) on the other hand commended leadership of the WiTG for its formation.
She said the participation of women in forest activities is often overlooked. She believes that, WiTG will help to sensitize women to engage in timber as well as tree planting.
Mrs Edith Abrakwa has however entreated leadership the association to be able to resolve issues and challenges to make it sustainable.
