“Who has been planning?” — Samini reacts to Accra floods

Ghanaian dancehall and reggae artiste Emmanuel Andrews Samini, popularly known as Samini, has voiced strong concern over recurring flooding in Accra following a heavy downpour that left several parts of the capital submerged.

The award-winning musician took to social media platform X on June 8, 2026, to express frustration over what he described as persistent failures in urban planning and drainage management in the city.

In his post, Samini questioned the effectiveness of planning institutions responsible for shaping Accra’s development, noting that the country has had decades to address the issue since independence but continues to face the same challenges every rainy season.

He wrote, “We have been in charge of town and country planning since 1957, yet we see floods every year. Who has been doing the planning, chale?”

He also called for accountability, suggesting that officials who approve construction permits in waterways should be identified and held responsible for the recurring disaster.

“The person who gave people permits to build homes in waterways is the one I’m looking for… mount a search, chale. #AccraFloods #GhanaFloods. Pray for those affected,” he wrote.

Samini’s comments come amid renewed public debate over Accra’s drainage infrastructure, with many residents once again suffering property damage and disruption after the latest rains.

The “My Own” hitmaker’s remarks also add to recent comments made by Kwaw Kese, who argued that demolishing homes alone will not solve the flooding problem, but rather that authorities should invest in proper drainage systems.
