The mayor of the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA), Mr Kwabena Samuel Pyne has indicated that his outfit has developed a technology to detect city guards who allegedly receive money as bribes from traders.
Kumasi city is highly congested to the extent that, traders sell on pavements and the middle of roads whilst drivers park haphazardly in the central business centre.
A lot of people including traders have raised concerns that, KMA guards who are to ensure a serene environment in the city rather take monies in the form of bribes from drivers and traders to ply their business.
Speaking about the terrible situation on Oyerepa Breakfast Time, Friday, Mr Sam Pyne stated that, he has received reports of the city guards extorting monies from drivers and traders; however, concrete evidence to punish them is yet to be received.
To have clear evidence of the awkward attitude of the guards, the KMA has developed a drone to detect any of them who may engage in the act, he revealed.
“Mostly we don’t get evidence, so I’ve allowed one young man to develop a drone for the assembly. He has taken videos from the drone and we’re going to pick evidence from it. We’ll use the drone to detect city guards who will take bribes from drivers and traders. We’re doing this because, if someone decides to use the phone to record them, the guards will attack him/her.
“So when we assess it (videos from the drone) and pick evidence from that, we’ll work on the evidence and will punish accordingly any city guard who’ll be caught in the act.” KMA boss, Sam Pyne declared.
He however urged the public to record and report the city guards’ bad acts to the Assembly for punishment.
“Whoever sees MTTD or metro guard extorting money from a trader or driver, record them, give it to us as evidence and we act on it to sanitize the system.” Mr Sam Pyne entreated.
