Alhaji Yakubu Musah Barry, the National Secretary for the Fulani Association of Ghana, has issued a stern warning to Ghanaians, urging them to put an end to the discrimination faced by his people, the Fulbe or Fulani ethnic group.
In recent years, the Fulbe community has been subjected to relentless attacks within Ghana. Tragically, numerous Fulbe individuals have lost their lives, properties, and livestock. Countless others have been forced to witness the destruction of their homes, as they endure constant assaults by Ghanaian perpetrators in the Bongo Soiby region of Bono East, where the Fulanis predominantly reside.
Furthermore, a heart-wrenching incident occurred in Zackoli, a small community near Yendi in the northern region, where nine Fulanis were mercilessly burned to death. In addition to this, five Fulanis were brutally killed in Obuasi and Takwa, while one Fulbe man was tragically beheaded in Maame Krobo, Tiase District, to name just a few instances.
Despite numerous reports filed with the police, the perpetrators of these heinous acts continue to roam free, evading punishment.
Consequently, the Fulani leadership in Ghana is deeply distressed by the prevailing discrimination and injustice within the country.
The leadership is particularly aggrieved by the denial of access to essential national documents, such as Ghana Cards and passports.
“We are often denied these two important documents on the basis that we Fulanis are not Ghanaians even when we can proof that we are citizens.”He made the statement at the Tabital Pulaaku International, Ghana Chapter 11th Annual Dual held in Kumasi Central Mosque.
The Fulani Association of Ghana earnestly urges all Ghanaian citizens to acknowledge the humanity and rights of the Fulani people. It is crucial to recognize that they are fellow citizens of this country, and it is high time that many Ghanaians cease discriminating against this community.
