“We can’t pay school fees” — Mr Ibu’s children make emotional appeal

The family of late Nigerian comic icon John Ikechukwu Okafor, popularly known as Mr Ibu, has made a public appeal for assistance as they battle severe financial difficulties more than two years after the actor’s passing.

In an emotional video circulating online, Mr Ibu’s widow and their children painted a troubling picture of their current circumstances, revealing that basic necessities have become increasingly difficult to afford. According to the family, they are struggling to keep a roof over their heads, maintain utility services and fund the children’s education.

Speaking about their predicament, the late actor’s wife disclosed that their electricity supply had been disconnected after months of unpaid bills, forcing the family to seek alternative ways to keep their phones charged.

“There is a problem with water, and because I have not paid the house rent, they have even cut my light for two months now. Every night we go to look for where to charge our phones, and it’s not easy. It’s not easy,” she said.

The widow expressed disappointment that the relatives of a man celebrated across Africa for bringing joy to millions are now facing such difficult living conditions.

“The family of a legend, not just anybody, Mr Ibu. Now that he’s gone, his family should not be suffering,” she added.

One of the actor’s daughters, a 14-year-old student, also shared the family’s ordeal, praising her mother for tirelessly working to provide for them despite the mounting challenges.

“I have to thank God for my mom. She tries everything she can to feed us, pay our school fees, and make us happy,” she said.

The teenager further appealed to Nigerians and admirers of her father’s work to support their education before their situation worsens.

“What we need from Nigerians is school fees. Otherwise, we cannot go to school again,” she pleaded.

The family disclosed that school authorities have repeatedly reminded them about outstanding tuition balances, raising concerns that the children could soon be denied access to education if the fees remain unpaid.

John Ikechukwu Okafor, affectionately known as Mr Ibu, was one of Africa’s most recognizable comic actors, earning fame through decades of performances in Nollywood productions. His unique style of comedy made him a household name across the continent and beyond. Following his death after a prolonged health battle, many expected his legacy to continue providing comfort for his loved ones.

The family’s appeal has generated widespread sympathy on social media.
