The Chief Executive of the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA), Samuel Pyne, has stated that the Kumasi Central Market Phase 2 will not be completed before the upcoming general election.
Phase Two, which is a continuation of Phase One, aims to improve selected infrastructure in the Central Business District of Kumasi, as well as to redevelop, modernize, and expand the commercial and social/community facilities of the central market enclave.
It is also meant to provide facilities necessary and complementary for the effective and efficient functioning of the completed first phase of the project.
However, work on the market has come to a halt for some time.
Speaking in an interview with Akua Asiedua on Oyerepa Breakfast Time, the mayor attributed the suspension of Phase 2 of the Kejetia Redevelopment Project to the government’s external debt exchange program.
“We have completed over 80 percent of the work on the central market Phase 2. The debt exchange program is ongoing, but the government has completed two negotiations. We had expected to start this January, but some issues came up. We will start work soon, though I can’t give the exact date. I must be honest with you, we may not finish the project before this year’s elections.” The Mayor asserted.
