Ghanaian dancehall star Livingstone Etse Satekla, popularly known as Stonebwoy, has pushed back against the perception that Ghanaian men are stingy, arguing that their spending habits are often influenced by how carefully they assess their finances.

Speaking in a recent interview, Stonebwoy was asked to react to some things associated with Ghanaians, including “egg, big bum and stingy.” Addressing the last description, he suggested that Ghanaian men are simply cautious about committing money when the figures do not add up.

“On the stingy part, oh my days. You know? The Ghanaian boys are good at maths. So maybe when they’re calculating the amount, you know, against how, you know, it gets to them, but the promise is big,” he said.

The multiple award-winning musician, however, said men should avoid making extravagant promises they cannot afford to honour. He encouraged them to be upfront about their financial circumstances, stressing that women value sincerity.

“You see, this is what I tell my Ghana boys: be honest. Be honest, you don’t know who you’re dealing with. Because women love honesty,” Stonebwoy said.

He cited the example of a man promising to take a woman on a boat ride without having the money to pay for it, warning that such promises could create unrealistic expectations for other men.

“Now, for the fact that you took this beautiful Madam Joyce on a boat, on an Uber boat, and gave her a promise that didn’t match the boat, you have spoiled the market for us. When you say, ‘Oh, I’ll take you on a boat,’ you make sure you book the boat. You make sure you put your last money onto it because she’s special to you, you treat her specially,” he added.

Stonebwoy also drew a comparison between Ghanaian and Nigerian men, saying Nigerian men are often more daring when it comes to spending on women.

“The Nigerian boys too, they have heart. Let me tell you, Nigerians, they get liver,” he said, explaining that the expression referred to their willingness to take financial risks.

For Stonebwoy, spending on a loved one ultimately comes down to personal choice, provided the individual is prepared for the consequences.

“So it’s a choice if you want to spend all your money and go broke on that person that you love. I bet you it’s a good thing. Because you must do something that your heart pleases,” he said.

His remarks have reignited the familiar debate over whether Ghanaian men are genuinely stingy or simply more financially cautious, while also putting the spotlight on honesty and expectations in relationships.
