Veteran Nollywood actor Chief Chiwetalu Agu has stirred conversations about relationships and marriage after advising singles to look beyond outward qualities when choosing a life partner.

The actor, widely recognised for his memorable roles in Nigerian films, urged unmarried men and women not to make decisions based only on factors such as virginity, physical appearance, financial status, or social achievements.

In a video shared online, Chiwetalu Agu emphasised that a person’s values and behaviour should be the major factors considered before entering marriage, arguing that certain personal qualities alone do not guarantee a successful union.

“Keeping your virginity or being a virgin doesn’t automatically make you wife material. Don’t marry a woman simply because she is a virgin. Virginity signifies purity, not loyalty, good character, emotional intelligence, or emotional maturity,” he said.

The actor added that men should also not be selected based solely on their looks, wealth, or achievements, stressing that a partner’s true nature is revealed through their actions and treatment of others.

“The same thing applies to men. Don’t marry a man simply because he is a virgin, handsome, wealthy, or successful. For the sake of your life, peace, happiness and sanity, choose someone whose character has been tested and proven. Ask questions. Marry someone who genuinely connects with you, someone who is kind, respectful, loving, emotionally mature and committed to building a healthy relationship,” he advised.

Chief Chiwetalu Agu further noted that having a partner with strong morals and a strong faith is an added blessing, maintaining that character remains the foundation of a lasting marriage.

“If you find a partner who has all the good qualities and, most importantly, is God-fearing, then you’re very fortunate. Character is the foundation of a lasting marriage. Everything else is secondary,” he added.

Chiwetalu Agu, whose career spans several decades in Nollywood, has over the years been known for sharing his views on social issues, family values, and relationships, often sparking discussions among fans and the public.
