The Majority Leader in Parliament, Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu has alleged that some Chiefs and Municipal/District Assemblies are aware of where illegal mining (galamsey) operations are taking place in the country.
According to him, the chiefs get some sort of money from the galamseyers.
“Our chiefs know all the galamsey sites in their communities. They earn some stipends from the galamseyers.” The Suame Lawmaker stated emphatically on Oyerepa Breakfast Time, Monday, September 12, 2022.
He explained that, although the chiefs may not have given permits to the miners, however, the galamseyers invariably approach the chiefs before they carry on with their operations.
“The chiefs may not authorize the galamseyers but the truth is that, before they (galamseyers) start work, they go to the chiefs. So the chiefs know every single miner in their communities.” Kyei Mensah said.
He further said, the various Municipal and District Assemblies are also aware of the situation despite not giving permit to the illegal miners.
“The Assemblies also know about every galamsey operations in their jurisdiction. No single assembly can say it’s not aware. Although they may not give the miners a permit, but they’re aware of all the illegalities.” The Minster of Parliamentary affairs fumed.
